A mushroom liquid culture is living mushroom mycelium suspended within a nourishing nutrient broth, typically stored inside a medical-grade syringe or mason jar.
The nutrient broth is yellow or golden due to the ingredients that it is made with. Once the nutrient broth is pressure-cooked, the nutrients react to the heat inside the pressure cooker as the nutrient broth is sterilized. The reaction is mainly caused by sugars caramelizing.
The nutrient broth is the most critical component of the mushroom liquid culture syringe. Without a proper nutrient broth, the mushroom mycelium will not be able to survive for long. The possibility of receiving mycelium which is weak or dead on arrival is high if the vendor is using internet nutrient broth recipes that are not explicitly designed for the application of mushroom mycelium storage in a small medical-grade syringe.
